Scottish Borders Community Orchestra
The Scottish Borders Community Orchestra exists to create a vehicle for amateur musicians of all ages to perform orchestral and chamber music repertoire in the Borders. At present there are 52 full time members, ranging in age from 11 to 80. The SBCO creates opportunities for local people to perform in a range of full-scale orchestral concerts and chamber music ensembles. There is a strong commitment to skill sharing and allowing younger and less experienced performers to perform alongside professional musicians. The SBCO is in the second year of a three year Lottery funded project which effectively increases the scope and scale of opportunities they are able to create for the orchestra.
Among the ranks of the orchestra there is a core group of 12 people (mostly string players) who are aged 60+ and regularly contribute to the activities of the SBCO and are committed to extending their skills and abilities as musicians. The amateurs play alongside professionals in the orchestra. The leaders of each section is an experienced professional musician and guest soloistsare of international standing ( eg: Steven Isserlis, Peter Donaghue ) For Scotts Selkirk SBCO will again be providing a string quartet.
